JSON Beautifier – Beautify JSON Online

Beautify JSON online free. This JSON Beautifier turns compact, minified or unreadable data into clean, properly indented JSON with one entry per line — so a response you copied out of a terminal finally makes sense to read, debug or paste into a bug report.

Everything runs locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no sign-up is needed.

What is a JSON Beautifier?

A JSON beautifier is a small JSON formatting tool that takes a document which is compact, minified or hand-assembled and rewrites it so a person can read it: every key, every array item and every value gets its own line, and nesting is expressed by indentation rather than by counting braces.

Only the whitespace changes. Keys, values, numbers, booleans, nulls and the order of everything stay exactly as they were, so the beautified document still means precisely the same thing to every program that reads it. Nothing is renamed, sorted, rounded or converted.

That makes beautifying the first thing to do with JSON that arrived from somewhere else: an API response you copied out of a terminal, a row dumped from a database, a value in a log file, or a snippet from a bug report. Make it readable, then work on it.

How to beautify JSON

Paste your JSON into the Input JSON panel, press Beautify JSON, and read the result in the Beautified JSON panel. Then copy it with the Copy button, download it, or paste it straight into your editor.

That is the whole workflow: paste, beautify, copy. It is the quickest way to make JSON readable again after a server has handed you one long unreadable line.

The result is indented with two spaces per level, which is the convention used by most JSON tooling. If your project expects tabs or four spaces, beautify the JSON here and run it through your own editor's re-indent command afterwards.

  1. 1Paste your JSON into the Input JSON area.
  2. 2Click Beautify JSON.
  3. 3Review the beautified output on the right.
  4. 4Copy the beautified JSON if you need it.

JSON beautifier example: before and after

The same document arrives minified on the left and beautified on the right. Nothing was added to the data and nothing was removed - it is the same JSON, laid out so a person can read it.

Before – minified
{"name":"John","age":30,"active":true,"skills":["JavaScript","React"]}
After – beautified
{
  "name": "John",
  "age": 30,
  "active": true,
  "skills": [
    "JavaScript",
    "React"
  ]
}

Common JSON formatting problems

Beautification is about legibility, not repair. It cannot turn invalid JSON into valid JSON, but it does solve the readability problems that come up constantly:

  • Minified JSON

    A single 4,000-character line with no line breaks at all. Each key, value and closing brace is on screen at once and nothing can be found by eye. One entry per line makes it scannable.

  • Deeply nested objects

    Six or more levels of nesting collapse into an unreadable wall of braces. Indentation turns structure into something you can see, so you can tell at a glance which keys belong to which level.

  • Large arrays

    A list of fifty records on one line gives you no way to tell item 34 from item 35. Breaking the array out item by line makes a diff between two versions readable too.

  • Long API responses

    Responses copied from a terminal or a log viewer arrive as one unbroken stream. Beautifying them is usually the first step in finding the field you actually wanted.

  • Difficult-to-read JSON strings

    Embedded HTML, escaped quotes, unicode escapes and multi-line text become far easier to check once they sit on their own lines with predictable indentation.

  • Inconsistent or missing indentation

    Hand-written or machine-concatenated JSON often mixes tabs and spaces, or indents by a width nobody agreed on. Beautifying normalises every level to the same two-space indent.

JSON pretty print and JSON indentation

JSON pretty print is the practice of writing JSON so that structure is visible: one entry per line, arrays broken out item by item, and each nesting level indented further than the last. Pretty printed JSON is what you want in a config file you commit, in documentation, in a bug report, and anywhere a colleague has to read it.

The JSON indent is the width of one nesting level, and this beautifier uses two spaces. It is the most widely used choice: JSON.stringify in JavaScript and json.dumps in Python both default to it, so output from this tool drops straight into code that expects the same shape.

One thing worth knowing is that beautifying does not preserve the original characters. Because the document is parsed and written back out, a number written as 1.0 can come back as 1 and an escape sequence may be written in its shortest form. The data is identical; the exact bytes are not. If you need the source text preserved character for character, use the JSON Minifier, which copies strings through untouched.

JSON Beautifier vs JSON Minifier

The two tools do opposite jobs and neither one changes your data, so you can move a document back and forth between them without loss. The JSON Beautifier adds whitespace; the JSON Minifier removes it.

Typical resultIndented, multi-line blockOne long line

Need the other direction? Use the JSON Minifier to strip the whitespace back out and compress the same document into a single line.

JSON Beautifier vs JSON Validator

A beautifier rearranges whitespace and a validator reads syntax. You can beautify only valid JSON, so a document that will not beautify cleanly is usually a document the validator can explain.

AspectJSON BeautifierJSON Validator
PurposeMakes valid JSON easy to readConfirms the JSON is syntactically valid
What you getThe same data re-indented with line breaksA valid or invalid verdict, plus the exact error location
On invalid JSONReports the parser error and leaves the output unformattedReports the same parser error as a formal result
Changes your dataNo - only whitespace is rewrittenNo - it only reads it

Need to check syntax rather than layout? Run the same input through the JSON Validator to get a formal valid or invalid verdict with the exact error location.

JSON Beautifier vs JSON Formatter

In this project they are the same operation. The JSON Formatter page and this JSON Beautifier both parse the document and write it back out with a two-space indent, so the two produce identical output - only the name, the wording and the surrounding explanation differ. Pick the page whose name matches what you were looking for; there is no extra formatting option on either one that the other lacks.

Searching for “format JSON” or “JSON Formatter online”? Our JSON Formatter runs the same two-space beautification, so either page returns the same readable JSON.

What happens with invalid JSON

Beautifying is a formatting operation, not a repair one. A document that does not parse cannot be laid out, so the beautifier reports the real parser error and the output panel stays unformatted until the syntax is fixed.

Invalid example – input
{"name":"John","age":30,}
Result: Invalid JSON— Trailing comma before '}'. JSON does not allow a comma after the last property - remove it. (line 1, column 25)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a JSON Beautifier?▾

A JSON Beautifier takes compact, minified or hand-assembled JSON and rewrites it with indentation and line breaks so a person can read it. Every key, array item and value gets its own line, and nesting is shown by indentation instead of by counting braces. It is also called a JSON prettifier or a JSON pretty printer, and the data it produces is exactly the data you pasted in.

How do I beautify JSON online?▾

Paste your JSON into the Input JSON panel, press the Beautify JSON button, then copy the result with the Copy button. Everything runs inside your browser, so there is nothing to install, no account to create, and your JSON is never uploaded. Ctrl+Enter beautifies from anywhere on the page.

How do I format JSON?▾

Format and beautify are two words for the same operation: parse the document and write it back out with a consistent indent. Paste the JSON you want to make readable and press Beautify JSON. If your goal is the other direction - turning a readable document into a compact single line - that is what the JSON Minifier does instead.

What is the difference between a JSON Beautifier and a JSON Formatter?▾

None in terms of the result. Beautify JSON and format JSON describe the same transformation and this tool produces identical output either way. People use the two names interchangeably, which is why Calzyra keeps a dedicated JSON Formatter page as well: use whichever name you searched for, and you will get the same readable, two-space-indented document.

What is JSON pretty print?▾

JSON pretty print means writing JSON in a form a human can scan: one entry per line, arrays broken out item by item, and consistent indentation so nesting is visible. A JSON pretty printer is simply a tool that does it. This beautifier pretty prints with a two-space indent, the convention used by JSON.stringify in JavaScript and json.dumps in Python.

Can I beautify minified JSON?▾

Yes - minified JSON is the most common input for a beautifier. A single-line document such as {"name":"John","age":30} is expanded into a properly indented block. You can also paste JSON that is already beautified: running it again produces the same result, so the tool is safe to use twice.

Does beautifying JSON change the data?▾

The values do not change. Keys, values, types and the order of every entry are preserved, so the beautified document means exactly the same thing to any program that reads it. What can differ is the text: the document is parsed and written back out, so a number written as 1.0 may come back as 1, and escape sequences may be written in their shortest form. That is textual normalisation, not a data change.

Can I beautify large JSON files?▾

Yes. Beautification runs entirely in your browser, so there is no upload size limit and nothing is sent to a server. Large API responses and multi-megabyte data files are processed locally, which also keeps your data private.

Why is my JSON not beautifying?▾

A beautifier can only lay out a document it can parse. If your JSON has a syntax error the tool reports the parser message together with the line, column and character position, and the output panel stays unformatted. The usual causes are a trailing comma before a closing brace or bracket, single quotes instead of double quotes, an unquoted object key, a missing comma between entries, and comments, which standard JSON does not allow. Run the same input through the JSON Validator if you want a dedicated syntax check.

Is this JSON Beautifier free?▾

Yes. It is free to use with no sign-up, no usage limit and no watermark. Beautifying happens locally in your browser, which also means your JSON never leaves your device.
